Let's get burning....

CBC is reporting the GVRD is interested in a plan to burn biosolids (or sewage sludge) for energy. Not only would there be enough energy to operate the sewage plant, there would be extra energy to spare.

Article can be found here: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2007/02/06/sewage-power.html

What an interesting idea! Burn waste cleanly (more clean than coal-burning) with modern incinerators to create energy!! Are you listening government? BC does not need a coal-burning energy plant to create energy and increase the amount of greenhouse gases in our planet’s atmosphere. Municipalities can simply burn sewage to reduce solid wastes, and create energy, which also burns cleaner than coal!! (Got that all?)

Bio gas might also be an interesting option too....create methane from sewage. They could also collect the fat, oil, etc., to make bio-diesel. Many European cities are already doing both of these things. Many private companies and individuals are doing this as well. So....why can’t we look at these existing models and see what we can do as well?
Our planet isn’t getting any healther.....

Actually, there are many technologies available to treat waste: biological, mechanical, MBT and thermal technologies. They are more sustainable than the traditional landfills. In fact, Tawian, Japan, US, Europe and China has already implemented various thermal treatments. Incineration and gasifications are effective thermal treatments that not only deter the amount of waste entering landfills but can provide electricity and biogas. Dioxin emissions are relatively small.
