Winter Wonderland....

Oooh pretty snow!! YAAY! We're going to have snow! I wonder if its going to stick..... or so I thought Saturday evening when the fluffy stuff began to fall....and fall, and fall, and fall. It was still snowing when I went to bed around midnight that night, with a nice layer of white covering everything.

Sunday morning, I wake up to prepare for tutoring and look out the window, and it is snowing and snowing.....and snowing. WOW!! There's almost 20 centimetres of snow out there, and its sticking! I can make a snowman later!! The phone rings, and tutoring is cancelled. They don't want to drive out there in the snow. Understandable. So I try to go back to bed, but just can't fall asleep. I end up getting up and making a big pot of congee to enjoy, with the snow falling outside.

That same morning after breakfast and after hubby is wide awake, we go out in the snow. He shovels while I build a snowman. Of course he helps after. Instead of driving to the grocery store, we decide to walk.

Sunday evening it is still snowing and we worry about tomorrow. A colleague of his calls as we are getting ready for bed asking if she can get a ride to work tomorrow. He makes no promises and says he'll call her in the morning.

Monday morning about 1 foot of snow on the ground, we know traffic will be quiet and slow, and transit services delayed. Hubby finds out he doesn't have to go to work as the camups is closed due to power outages and very limited bus service. I call frodowm, calling her a "lucky plucky" she doesn't need to go to work (ack! I was wrong - classes cancelled for her but campus still open), and hubby drives me to the skytrain station.

And here I wait for the skytrain....coming from anywhere between 5 and 10 minute intervals. Seven trains pass by and I still can't get on, getting shoved, etc., my toes are freezing, my fingers were beginning to hurt (yes I was nice and warm in winter boots, gloves, coat, toque and scarf - but it wasn't enough after 1 hour in that weather). I get out of line to call my hubby on the payphone. No answer. I call others, no answer. I have 2 quarters left and manage to get ahold of hubby. He comes to pick me up and I get to work 2 hours late.

Today, I'm more prepared. Frodowm and I bought warm fuzzy socks (the ones mountain hikers wear) and she got better mitts / gloves last night. Today, I have a bigger scarf, a warmer toque, fuzzy socks over regular socks, and snow pants added to my regular ski jacket and gloves. I just hope its enough for the -20 Celsius its supposed to be tonight. *cry*

On the positive side, maybe a few more days of this weather will be enough to kill the mountain pine beetles infesting our forests.

I still like snow, and kind of wish we had it more often like this. At least then everyone would be more prepared....including me.

I think I'll go buy another pair of socks today. >.>

(oh, for more on the snow effects, see frodowm's blog)

And on another plus side, water advisory was lifted yesterday. No more boiling water!! FINALLY!! My only fear right now is this weather will turn into another ice storm situation!! YIKES!

Weather forecast for Weds is for snow in the afternoon, but then temperature is supposed to rise a little, then it will rain in the evening or next day... I think we will be back to rainy weather next week...

did your snowman die a tragic death?? Mine toppled the very next day... I guess it wasn't very stable to begin with...

No our snowman didn't die a tragic death. It just leaned over and got bigger cuz...well, more snow fell and created a flufy layer on it.
