Living simply (or simple living)

Philosphy in life.....live simply.

What does that entail? Purchase only what is needed. Reduce, reuse, recyle. Treat the environment with respect. The world is not my oyster.

What I have been doing....
- purchase if I need it, not just because its on sale
- recycle anything and everything I can (I think we have as much recycling as we do garbage sometimes, if not more)
- use recyclable or reusable containers when I can
- reduce energy consumption and garbage (this year we will be getting a compost in the garden too), including using bio-diesel, increasing fuel efficiency, taking transit and car-pooling, walking, using energy-saving light-bulbs, etc.
- donate old clothing, books, toys, etc.

Pet peeves:
- extreme overpackaging.... actually, over-packaging of ANY kind
- non-recyclable items (example, non-recyclable plastic - I mean, why not use the recyclable kind???)
- styrofoam
- consumerism attitude of "must have it"
- people who purchase and drive large vehicles every day (and other non-fuel efficient vehicles) when they don't need it (e.g. hummers, SUVs, trucks to go to the office).

I'm trying not to kill the planet....but....there's only so much one person can do. Could everyone pitch in and help please???

Apparently Syrofoam can be recyclable, only it's not common to do so. Styrofoam can be melted to make plastics or something - at least that's what someone told me - don't know if that's true...

But even if it is recyclable, the recyling collection guys will only accept the stuff with the recycle symbol and the number (to categorize the types of plastic they take), otherwise, they won't take it away. >.<
